The Forbidden City Exhibition
Experiential Design
ROM’s centennial exhibition, The Forbidden City, uncovers the stories of China’s last emperors and their families who led their lives deep within the palace’s opulent interior.
Through graphics, calligraphy, light, drapery, video projections and animation, various parts of the Forbidden City were recreated in five areas of the exhibition. Colour selection was particularly important as it served to convey the mood of each space from formal and masculine Outer Court, to opulent and sensual Inner Court and tranquil Emperor’s Study.
Working with ROM’s senior exhibition designer, I created most graphics and labels for the show, including braille panels for tactile displays and the giant dragon projection in the Outer Court gallery.
